History Events in Columbus Georgia
History tells us Columbus, Georgia was the site of the last land battle of the Civil War. Actual pieces of Civil War ironclads, including actual metal plating from the USS Monitor (from the Battle of Hampton Roads fame) reside in the nation’s ONLY Civil War naval museum – the Port Columbus Naval Museum in Columbus, Georgia. Columbus is rich in history, Civil War era and otherwise. Our National Infantry Museum depicts the history of America’s Infantry through all wars since the Nation’s founding, and is a MUST see if you are visiting Columbus.
From its foundation as a trading outpost in the 1700’s to today’s home of the world’s greatest Infantry training center, known as Ft. Benning, Columbus has made a historical difference worth celebrating.
